Released in Japan 23 years after the initial Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (2002) introduced a new generation of viewers to the Yoshiyuki Tomino's sci-fi universe. Kira Yamoto becomes a mecha pilot when he stumbles onto the top secret GAT-X105 Strike Gundam during an attack on his home satellite-colony, Heliopolis. The Earth Alliance and ZAFT, the fighting arm of the genetically enhanced humans known as Coordinators, are at war; Heliopolis is caught between them. Because Kira is a Coordinator, he can pilot the Strike and reprogram its operating system with no training. Although he's a civilian, Kira joins the crew of the Earth Alliance ship Archangel, fighting off ZAFT attackers. But many of the "Naturals," the regular people he defends, doubt Kira's loyalty because he's a Coordinator--even when they owe their lives to his extraordinary abilities. The focus of the story is not the struggle between the Earth Alliance and ZAFT, nor the conflict between the Naturals and the Coordinators: it's the clash between Kira and his old classmate, Athrun Zala. A dedicated ZAFT officer, Athrun adheres to a space-age version of bushido, the warrior's code of honor; Kira only fights to protect his friends. These emotional entanglements provide a backdrop for the dramatic Mobile Suit battles in space, on Earth and under water. Director Mitsuo Kukada stages these CG fight sequences with a panache that makes the viewer forget how often the action violates the laws of physics. Gundam Seed provides all the elements that have made Gundam one of the most popular franchises in animation history. Material from the first 20 episodes was recut into the feature Mobile Suit Gundam Seed--The Movie. (Rated 13 and older: violence, minor profanity, brief nudity, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars Gundam with heart   January 29, 2009

I consider myself a very big fan of Gundam and I believe that these series is one of the best I've seen. It has the mecha design that fans have come to love and it has a lot of great character development. You can't help but feel for the plight of Kira and Athrun. Two friends who are forced to fight one another. Even secondary charcters are given realistic personalities and responses (i.e. Flay). For a series with mecha and a heart for the charcters you could do worse than see Gundam Seed. *Note: Got my set before Christmas and had no problems with defective disks*

Well ive read the other reviews and i just wanted to add something to it. First I recived the movies really quick, about 6-7 days...which is crazy cause im in South Korea. Second I have had no problems with my disk at all...Im not sure if they worked out the kinks in the system or what. Last i just have to say this is a great collection I am enjoying it alot.

5 out of 5 stars Gundam Seed, the best Gundam yet!   January 23, 2008

I've watched every Gundam since I was old enough to know Gundam existed. I never really got into most of them, and my giant robot fix instead went to Robotech/Macross. That is, until a few years ago when I discovered Gundam Seed. Having seen pictures, I originally thought it looked a little too pretty. But I gave it a try, and after the first episode, I was hooked. It's not only the best Gundam, but it's a good anime in general. This and it's follow-up (Gundam Seed Destiny) are on my top ten anime series of all time. Give it a try, I doubt you'll be disappointed.

As far as the discs being faulty, yeah, you should probably wait until that gets cleared up. Hopefully someone let's us know when that happens. Hopefully soon. Until then, we are just getting closer to volume 2's release. As far as giving it five stars, I did so because I think the series deserves it, even if the current DVDs have problems.

**Update! AS of January 5th, I bought a set, as I'd held out for the discs to stop being faulty, and lucky me, they work just fine. I didn't have any problems with any of the discs, but maybe that's just me.

5 out of 5 stars An Incedible Series But Sad And Heart-Wrenching Too   September 30, 2008

I've been a Gundam Wing fan so I knew I had to get these two complete box sets for my collection and have been very happy with my choice. With a lot of the Gundam universe story lines you have two dividing parties and beliefs the COORDINATORS(Basically genetically improved humans) and NATURALS(Normal humans) and the fight between them is basically which path humanity should ultimately take the way of the coordinators or natural evolution. The characters you also begin to care for is a lot more than the ten or so that I did on Gundam Wing and also unlike GW some of the characters you care for get killed off in some of the episodes. I don't want to give to much of the story away but I can tell you that about four of the characters in the series die about near the end of the show which for me was real heart-wrenching since you do want to see them get some kind of happy ending. The animation is clear and sharp and the audio for both the Japanese and English voice actors was great. Again with a lot of box sets there isn't much in the way of extras just some textless intro/ending songs and some trailers. I've heard that they're going to start releasing Gundam Seed Destiny in box sets soon but I doubt I'll be getting those because I've seen some episodes and they've already killed a couple of other characters I cared for off. But still if you're looking for a great mecha anime or just a great anime in general for the price of these box sets I say buy them now...

5 out of 5 stars NO PROBLEMS; a tight and simply moving series.   January 8, 2009

Too, be honest I was debating whether or not I should or shouldn't buy this. Since other peoples reviews stated that their copies had defects.
Well I DIDN'T and THANK GOD!!!

That aside, the story of Gundam SEED beginning is both a little too simple and a little slow/fast(depends on the situations). This made me wonder if it was worth it. I've heard that this won two awards and was better receieved than Gundam Wing in Japan. Another thing I should mention is that this is my first Gundam I have ever seen and, no, I didn't see the edited version on Cartoon Network. Granted, the show would've felt lacking edited(as most edits do). MY point is that thepacing of the show made me wonder if it was going to live up to it's hype.

The later episodes were a bit better, and around 18 was when I was COMPLETELY convinced that this was a great series. The main characters Kira and Athrun are very unique people, and the roles they play impress me of their morale.

The sub characters like Lacus, Flay, were also unique but in ways you would see in common US television shows. It helps us understand what they mean with material we see most of the time. Flay is a little creepy... but her character is very warped, yet their never a sense of overkill, like most animes get. Anime is usually known for it's over-the-top behavior, but this series is very down to earth, that to me signaled the first glimmer of it's beauty.

Now when it comes to languages I don't complain, but the only cases where I MIGHT consider it is when Lacus sings, and to just know what the other sounds like. I personally like the english dub since it fits most of the characters.

The story has very cool, touching, shocking, and just plain WOW parts that took me aback and in the end I felt that it was necessary. I say after 13 is when eratic, biziare stuff happens.

Gundam SEED is, to me, a different approach to anime, but since the theme is war, I don't complain.
